Working in the Field
Hands-On Landscape and Hardscape Work Across the Cedar Valley
Landscape team members help build the outdoor spaces Matthias Landscaping is known for: patios, retaining walls, outdoor living areas, planting beds, lawn installations, lighting systems, and commercial property improvements. The work is physical, seasonal, and detail-oriented. A good day on the crew means showing up prepared, keeping the jobsite organized, communicating clearly, and taking pride in the finished result.
Newer team members learn how to handle materials, protect existing property, prepare base layers, install plants correctly, and work safely around equipment. Experienced applicants may step into more advanced hardscape, grading, equipment operation, or crew leadership responsibilities depending on skill level.
The company is based in Waterloo and works throughout nearby communities, so reliability matters. Crew members should be comfortable working outdoors, following direction, asking questions when something is unclear, and helping the team finish each phase cleanly before moving to the next one.

What Makes a Strong Applicant
Reliable People Who Care About the Finished Work
Landscaping and hardscaping take steady effort, good communication, and attention to small details. A strong applicant does not need to know every material or machine on day one, but they should be ready to learn, ask questions, and follow the process that keeps work safe and consistent.
Team members represent Matthias Landscaping on residential and commercial properties throughout the Cedar Valley. That means showing respect for the customer’s home, protecting existing surfaces, keeping tools organized, and helping the crew leave each phase clean before moving on.
Skills That Help
- Outdoor work experience in landscaping, construction, farming, or maintenance
- Comfort with physical work, changing weather, and early starts
- Careful equipment use and willingness to learn jobsite safety habits
- Respectful communication with crew leaders, teammates, and customers
